As you probably know DD us Dylanheads are a crotchety,picky lot,not unlike deadheads in our passion for what he plays and how he plays it,so I think the complaints about his 70's material were more about a few choice songs he wasn't playing as opposed to the breadth of his 70's catalog because my first show was 81' and he was still in the "religious phase" and even then he did Simple Twist.I then saw him very regularly,about 10 shows a year from 85'-99',and in that span he did a fairly good job of playing songs fron his 70's output,of course I would have enjoyed a drastic revision of the setlists,but for the most part he did cover a wide range of the music he created.I'm claiming no expertise nor am I being contentious here DD,just speaking from what was my experience and I very well could be wrong.I can shed no light on Every Grain/Nana Mouskouri question,but I did chuckle at another seemingly unlikely Bob pairing to go along with Raquel Welch,Mavis Staples and many others.

Ha ha we are ! I am not a big fan of the Rolling Thunder shows and I find Desire rather uneven , with some really weak writing , BUT, lots Dylan fans just love this stuff , so my loss I guess . I actually may like Street Legal, the best of the 70's records ( and IT is uneven !).
Here is a bit on the Bob>Nana deal.

in the 1980s, she struck up an unlikely and somewhat intense friendship with Bob Dylan. After they were introduced by (who else?) Leonard Cohen, Dylan went to several of Mouskouri's concerts, enjoyed some late-night suppers with her and even wrote her a song: the sublime Every Grain of Sand.
Veteran Dylan-watchers may conclude from the specifics of this acquaintance that Bob was putting some of his famous moves on Nana, but either through lack of interest or good-hearted naivety she was able to resist.

Now I found this whole thing pretty weird in lots of ways .For one thing , she is as about as different of a singer from Bob, as could possibly be .Dylan's whole deal is "soul", where she, as Dylan has said "She sings like a bird in a cage", beautiful, but not terribly interruptive . I'm not crazy about her Dylan covers, they sound like she has been listening to Joan Baez's versions . Though her Hard Rain, is sort of good in a weird, sort of "Ode to Billy Joe', way .

Valid point on Desire,but for me Isis,Hurricane and One More Cup make up for some of the weaker points,but I have to say I don't like him colllaborating on the lyrics.I like Street Legal,but it feels a little produced for my taste,on the other hand you can't not like a record with Changing of the Guard,New Pony and Senor on it.Blood on the Tracks has 10 songs on it and all are good,some better than others,but all good and it has Idiot Wind,Shelter from the Storm and Tangled Up, which would be a great career for most songwriters.That was preceded by Planet Waves which had 6 great songs on it Goin',Goin',Gone,Tough Mama,Something There is About You,Hazel,Wedding Song and Forever Young.He finished off the decade with Slow Train and while I have no use whatsoever for any religious dogma I do enjoy Gotta Serve Somebody and I Believe in You.A couple of others from the decade I like are Ira Hayes from Dylan and Man in Me from New Morning,and the unreleased Abandoned Love,I have a solo acoustic live version from the Other End in 75' with a bunch of different lyrics which is one of my very favorite Dylan pieces.So there you go,lots of 70's material for him to choose from that would /did make me happy.
Very cool story on the background of Every Grain,and I did like her version of Hard Rain,she has a beautiful voice as opposed to Joan Baez,I rather take a cheese grater to the genitals than listen her annoying shrieking.

Michael Grey makes a point, that even without his seminal 60's work, he would still be a great artist . And if you pick and chose from just the 80's, ( Every Grain, Joker man, etc. ) he would still be great artist .
I'm on and off with Joan, some stuff I really like, , but I still laughed at the "cheese grater" comment . And talk about pandering , listen to her song "Children of the 80's" that she performed with the Dead !

That is a very interesting concept,isolating just his 80's work and he is still a great artist and I would have to agree.I went through his 80's catalog and found 14 great songs.
